Autumn Potpourri
Autumn Potpourri
Autumn Potpourri
------------------------------------------------------------
As our gardens are winding down, it's time to think about some of the crafts we can do to
keep it with us over the winter. Some are for sustenance and health, and some are for
pleasure. Potpourri is beautiful fragrant stuff. I happen to think that equals sustenance.
Making Potpourri
It is fun and easy to make potpourri, especially if you have kept dried petals from the
garden. I like to pick things during the spring, summer, and fall, and use them as each one
has some memory attached, and I am happiest when I am outside in the middle of nature.
There are just a few "rules" to follow, and the rest is a matter of imagination.
The first decision might be choosing a purpose. Do you want it to be a potpourri that is
healing? Maybe you're wanting it to draw love or money… That might mean that you'll pick
colors that coincide with the purpose, and scent and botanicals will focus on your goal.
You may toss in some gemstones, seashells, mosses, and cones. What is the predominant
color? Where will the potpourri go? Even the act of researching the ingredients can be
empowering before you begin.
Some other options for choosing your direction would be woodsy, floral, citrusy, spicy, or
exotic. For the sake of instruction, we will talk about a woodsy blend.
Begin by fixing the scent. This should be done a week or more before adding it to the
botanicals. Orris root granules are an excellent fixative - absorbing and holding the
fragrant oils.
In a jar, put 1/2 ounce of orris root, perhaps 1/4 ounce of oak moss, and some hemlock
cones, sandalwood chips, frankincense tears, or any mix of these ingredients to make about a
cup (these ingredients are woodsy, and just orris root is fine too). Pour about 1/2 ounce of
essential or fragrance oil into the jar and shake thoroughly. For a woodsy blend, one might
try some balsam fir, pine, frankincense, and patchouli oils. If the intent is to get the
benefits of aromatherapy, only essential oils may be used, as fragrance oils - while
smelling lovely - have no such effect.
Now mix together the botanicals. Pine cones, cinnamon pieces, citrus peels are a good start
for this one, as well as rose hips, with evergreen needles, oak moss, and some colorful
flowers thrown in to perk it up.
If the fixatives have been mixed for a week or so, they can be added to the blend, and the
fragrance will last for a very long time - up to a year or more.
Florals would generally use more color, and the fragrances would be light and flowery.
Lavender, rose geranium, and ylang ylang, for example, with some vanilla or musk to round it
out.
A spicy blend can be made up almost entirely of spices - cinnamon pieces, cardamom pods,
allspice, coriander, ginger, cloves, etc. Orange or lemon peel look good in there. Use
corresponding oils, and this blend can also be simmered.
Exotic blends include lots of vanilla, sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, and/or musk. Colors
can be whatever strikes you as exotic.
Finally, you can do whatever you like. Add seashells - interesting pods you find -
pebbles... it's up to you!
During the shortened, dark days of late fall and early winter, you'll be reminded of your
original intent in creating the potpourri each time you pass it or catch a whiff of the
fragrance.

Makiing a Scrying Mirror
Making a Scrying Mirror
Scrying
Mirror
by Ajna
DreamsAwake
This is a simple and
inexpensive project that the entire family can participate in. Children are
natural scryers and this is a wonderful opportunity to create their very own
Magick Mirror. This is also a great way for adults to connect with their inner
child in a creative and intuitive manner.
How to create a magickal
scrying mirrorItems needed
- oval picture frame
(available at most dollar stores)
- equal parts vinegar and
water solution to clean the glass
- newspapers
- high-gloss black paint
- paint brush
- turpentine and rags to
clean brushes
Optional
You may want to decorate
the frame in a way that is meaningful to you. Use a glue gun to add stones,
beads, feathers to the frame or you can paint magickal symbols on it.
During the New Moon, gather
your supplies either outside or in a well-ventilated area. Cast your circle and call on
Goddesses of Divination to guide you. Hathor, Oshun, Isis, Aine and Asherah are all wonderful
Goddesses to call on. Parents should supervise children during this part of the
project.
Spread newspapers around
your work area
Remove the glass from the
frame
Clean the glass with the
vinegar/water solution and dry with newspaper
Place it in the centre of
the newspapers
Clear your mind and pick up
the black paint
Paint one side of the glass
from top to bottom in even strokes
As you paint, visualize,
whisper or say aloud your intent for this magickal tool
Only paint one side of the
glass
Allow to dry completely
before applying the next coat (drying times may vary)
Apply several coats of
paint, ensuring the entire surface of the glass is coated (one side
only)
When the paint has dried
completely, return the glass to the frame
Ensure the glass side is
facing out
Charge your mirror during
the Full Moon and begin scrying.
How to use your
scrying mirror
In a
darkened room, light one small candle and place behind the mirror. Hold the
mirror in your hands or use a stand. Meditate on a question or chant softly
until your mind is focussed. Call upon Goddesses of Divination to assist
you.
Cast doubt from your mind,
expect to see images and it will happen.
Gaze into the blackness of
the mirror rather than focussing on the glass surface.
Do not blink the eyes more
than is necessary. Too much blinking breaks concentration, staring too hard can
cause eye strain.
Do not let your gaze wander
from the mirror. If you are experiencing some difficulty, try to visualize the
blackness as infinite space and project your gaze several feet into the
blackness.
It may take some practice
to achieve results but it is worth the effort. Limit your scrying time to 15
minutes until you get results. Scrying is a valuable tool to connect with the inner
workings of the sub-conscious.
Happy
Scrying!!!!

Making A Besom
How To Make Your Own Besom
"Making a Besom"
design & creation by: Edain McCoy
Here are some easy to follow directions for handcrafting your own besom by
Edain. If you would like a Besom of your own, they are fairly easy to find in
craft stores, country markets, or folk art fairs. You can also invest your
energies into making one, a good idea if you wish to use it in place of a Wand or
other ritual tool.
To make a Besom you will need a four-foot dowel one inch in diameter, a ball
of twine, scissors, and straw or other long strands of pliable herbs.
Take the straw, or another herb you have chosen for the bristles, and allow
them to soak overnight in warm, lightly salted water. The water softens the
straws to make them pliable, and the salt soaks out former energies.
When you are ready to make your Besom, remove the straws from the water and
allow them to dry a bit, but not so much that they lose the suppleness you will
need to turn them into your Besom.
Find a work area where you can lay out the length of your dowel, and begin
lining the straws alongside the dowel. Starting about three inches from the
bottom, lay the straws, moving backward, along the length of the dowel. Begin
binding these to the dowel with the twine. You will need to tie them very
securely. You can add as many layers of straw as you wish, depending on how full you
would like your Besom to be.
When the straw is secured, bend the top straws down over the twine ties. When
they
are all gently pulled over, tie off the straws again a few inches below the
original tie. Leave the Besom overnight to allow the straw to dry.
The dowel part of the Besom can be stained, painted, or decorated with Pagan
symbols, your Craft name, or any other embellishments you choose. Dedicate
your finished Besom in your Circle as you would any other ritual tool. ~From
Edain McCoy's book "The Sabbats: A New Approach to Living the Old Ways" (C) 1994.

Make Your Own Designer Blinds
Make Your Own Designer Blinds
Make Your Own Designer Blinds
Instead of buying expensive vertical or mini blinds, choose a wallpaper of your choice or to match existing wallpaper and use a mixture of 50/50 water and Elmer's glue. Cut the paper the length of your blinds and brush the paste mixture on the back of the paper and lay the blinds next to each other and cut between with a razor blade. Turn them over and press the paper down and they are ready to hang.
To remove the paper and paste, soak in the bathtub in hot water and the paper comes right off.

Making Candle Wicks
Craft Idea: Making Candle Wicks
Making Candle Wicks
What you will need;
Several feet of cotton string (depending on if you are making tapers or jars will need to be from 2 ft long to inches, cut to fit) Thickness does matter, if it's too thick, it will never burn up. If it's too small, it won't be able to wick up the wax fast enough for it to burn at a suitable rate, might take some experimentation till you find the best material.
You will also need a double boiler. Or a saucepan with a metal bowl or can that sits inside it. If you try to melting your wax right over your heat source it end up burning & may catch on fire. Bring the water in the bottom pan to a boil, making sure the water isn't hitting the can.
While you're waiting for your water to boil, spread out some news paper & tape it down. Makes for less hassle while you're working. After your water has a fairly good boil; add the inner pan with the wax and turn down heat. While your wax is melting, on low heat, let’s get wicks ready.
Now coat your wick with wax to stiffen it, I like to let it set & soak up the wax for about 10 minutes. You might need to poke it down in the wax with something like a fork. Slowly take it out, hold it above your pan to allow excess wax drain off. Then slowly move it over your newspaper.
Keep in a Ziploc bag until needed.
